Whitby
Whitby has it all – history, culture, seaside, countryside and so many activities that you will need a few days here at least.
Situated on the east coast in North Yorkshire, nestled in the dramatic and beautiful North Yorkshire Moors, Whitby is well served by public transport and a number of park and ride facilities. During the summer months, there’s even a steam train!
If you like fossil hunting, folk music, Gothic culture, the freshest seafood, rambling and much more, Whitby is for you.
South Holderness
With nature trails and wildlife reserves, cycle paths aplenty and some of the most picturesque countryside scenes, the stark beauty of South Holderness attracts birdwatchers and wildlife photographers. Around Spurn Point, there are seals almost all year round that can be seen along the coast on the North Sea side and sometimes in the Humber Estuary, just a few steps away on the other side of the peninsula. This area east of the city of Kingston Upon Hull has miles of coastline and its very level nature provides ‘big skies’ throughout the day, with spectacular sunrises, amazing sunsets and a dark, clear vista for astronomers.
Yorkshire Dales National Park
The Yorkshire Dales is a National Park like no other. Covering so much more area than most other English National Parks, there is so much to see that a short break will not be enough. You will not want to leave! The whole Yorkshire Dales National Park is a designated Dark Sky Reserve, the largest in the UK. There are waterfalls at Cotter Force, Stainforth Force, Cautley Spout and West Burton, to name but a few. Lakes and reservoirs at Grimwith, Semer Water and Malham Tarm. Caves at the Buttertubs Pass, Mossdale Caverns and Yourdas. A painter’s paradise at Twisleton Scars, Elbolton Hill, Fountains Fell and Great Shunner Fell.
